Holy shit... this is WICKED. Do you mind if I put this on my crackbook (and link you and credit you and all that?) all my scenester friends need to see this.
Great art and incisive commentary! I love it! I have a lot I want to tell you, so put this aside if you're in a hurry. OK?
I ran across your page earlier today, and saw a couple of your pieces, and added you to my as fast as I've ever added anyone! And no, it's not just because you're at least a semi-homegirl. I'm from Baltimore, and for a long time lived around the corner from MICA, at Park and Lafayette. So even if you're not from Maryland, you have homegirl status with me. But I digress . . .
I'd really like to see you continue with the Native American theme. For a number of years I worked on Native American tribal recognition issues in the Governor's Office. Interestingly, the Maryland tribes have confabbed and decided that they prefer being referred to as American Indian. I'll tell you their rationale another time . . . But I know that their Commission would love to see this piece. Here's their website: [link] But I still know people there, and I would be glad to link you with them if you like.
On the American Indian/Native American theme (and here is where I'd like to see you do an artistic interpretation), we talked with the Commission a lot about eradicating racist sports team nicknames. Like, hmmmm? Let's see . . . Like Washington Redskins?!? There was a great civil rights poster about this maybe 20 years ago that depicted what looked like baseball team pennants. There were several pennants that were labeled something like this: "Brooklyn Kikes, Detroit Niggers, New York WOPs" They were aiming at the Redskins and some of the other Native American caricature stuff that goes on in American sports "culture" and society in general. Oh! I almost forgot! Did you ever hear about that intramural basketball team at the University of norther Colorado? They were called the "Fighing Whities!" Here's the link to their page: [link] Here's the deal, Jen. If you end up doing a piece of art for the Indian Affairs Commission, I will buy you whatever you want from the "Fighting Whities" page!
So I guess my point here is that if you want a contact or two with the Indian Affairs Commission, please let me know.
So Jen, are you already sorry you "met" me yet? Maybe I should have written all of this as a Note, but, oh well, I did it publicly. I think that you can tell that I'm somewhat passionate on these issues (posers/racism), and I know that you could blow my eardrums out on things you care about.
Just let me know what you want to do . . . Richard
For those who have many watchers, and for those who dont have many, it is hard to know how one retains that interest as well as receive more. This article explores the basics of watchers and how we react to certain situations. Although it does not affect some deviants, and the tips are generally related to common sense, we hope the article is a worthwhile read and that the majority learn something from reading this.
Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it. Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article.
In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
Project Comment is a project that features the generally obscured and underappreciated artists and their art in regular news articles. Our objective is to recognise deviants who deserve more recognition and to feature deviations with less than 10 original comments.
The 0-5 Comments Issues feature a deviant as well as 3 deviations with less than 5 original comments from a wide selection of art. Please give your time to this article and to write constructive comments so that you make a true difference to the artists featured here.
The Deviousness Award is an accolade which is traditionally handed out on the 1st of every month to one trully outstanding deviant. `Cyantre is one of the most helpful deviants within our community. it is frustrating trying to find native art on DA because of all the idiots who make photos like that.
